Hina Hanai a ka Malama (Hina Nourished by the Moon)
Hina Hanai a ka Malama (Hina Nourished by the Moon) 48” x48” mixed media on board Like the character arc in a fairytale, Hina Hanai a ka Malama moved from a vague idea to the temptation to stop too soon, became seemingly ruined, and at last harmonious. At first I didn’t know this painting was going to be about Hina who is a mythical Eve-like figure in Hawaiian folklore. All I could imagine were triangles. I read about the North Star pattern in quilt-making which was used to

The Palila Project
The Palila Project is up at Viewponts Gallery in Maui! I made 11 paintings, a sculpture, and facilitated a large mural celebrating the critically endanger honeycreeper that lives on the slopes of Mauna Kea and no where else in the world. Arah Ko wrote 2 poems inspired by the Palila's song, and biologist Lisa Mason informed the artwork. The Project was created around the idea of makawalu. In Olelo Hawai'i, maka means eyes, and walu is eight. The word has the connotation of an

Crossing Over
Ever a land of contrasts, nowhere is the chiaroscuro of Hawai'i more evident than on Saddle Road aka Daniel K. Inouye Highway. The road is rough, narrow, often obscured by fog, and surrounded by volcanic cones. It feels like another planet entirely. It was built in 1943 after the attack on Pearl Harbor as a military access road. We use it to get to the on

God's Tears
Living in such a utilitarian culture where the financial bottom line is the only one that counts, being an artist can feel like a pointless endeavor. I have been called "artsy-fartsy," told that I will never make a living, and felt my work to be superfluous among so many pressing global needs. But intuitively I know that making of any sort brings healing, and not just to the makers. In so many surprising ways the Bible supports this idea, as Makoto Fujimura explores in detail
