‘I’iwi is a small honeycreeper now critically enangered by avian malaria and habitat loss. Early Hawai’ians considered their red plumage sacred and would make cloaks, helmets, and lei from thousands of feathers. No birds were harmed though. Kia manu, special bird catchers would take only one feather at a time and release the birds back into the wild. I also illustrated a favorite tree of the ‘i’iwi, endemic ‘ōhi’a lehua.
