An original mixed media painting on a cradled 32" x 20" wooden panel, Celestial Navigation incorporates woodblock printing, collage, gold leaf, and antique sheet music into a unique work creating a childlike sense of wonder though its linework and whimsical haloed whales.
 
It is part of a series in which the underlying structure is a gameboard, in this case hopscotch, evoking the concepts of memory and time.
 
It also references my wayfinders series about the ancient navigators who sailed accross the ocean to discover Hawaii without the aid of any instruments. Celestial Navigation touchs on our own individual voyage through life, serious but playful, holy yet subject to entropy. I view wayfinding as a metaphor of our spiritual journeys in which the unknown mysteriously waiting for us turns out to be our truest home.
